Going to university or college is a very exciting time in the life of any student. However, it’s important that you start preparing for life at university at the time of sending out the applications. Depending upon what career you wish to pursue, it’s important that you apply to a university that offers relevant undergraduate programs. The Concordia University Chicago is one of the biggest universities in Illinois. The university is currently home to more than a thousand undergraduate students and more than three thousand graduate students spread throughout four of its colleges. These are as follows:

  • ·         College of Arts and Sciences
  • ·         College of Education
  • ·         College of Business
  • ·         College of Graduate and Innovative Programs

The university has sites spread around the Chicago metropolitan area. The university is a member of the Concordia University system, which is a network of several colleges and universities spread throughout America that are affiliated with the Lutheran Church.

The Concordia University Chicago has a long and extensive history. The foundation of the university was laid in 1855 by Philip Fleischmann and Friedrich Johann Carl Lochner, two Lutheran ministers who created a private seminary for teachers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A couple of years later, the responsibility for the seminary was taken by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The school then moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, and finally to Addison, Illinois. It was then renamed as the Concordia Teachers’ Seminary. It is the oldest institution in the Concordia University System.

If you have been accepted to the Concordia University Chicago, there are many things that you should plan for. If you don’t live in Chicago and are going to move from another city altogether, here are a few things that you need to do before the semester begins.

Concordia University Chicago

Find a Place to Live

The first thing that you need to do is find affordable accommodation. If you are moving with a group of friends, you should consider renting a small apartment and dividing the rent and utility bills amongst your group. This will help you save a lot of money. However, if you are moving on your own, you could rent a room in the university’s dormitory. The yearly prices may vary depending on where you book the room.

Try to save as much money as you can on accommodation. You should check pictures of the rooms online and read the descriptions of all amenities offered by the place before you sign the contract. It is important that you find a place that’s located close to the university itself. It will help you save a lot of money on traveling.

Join Relevant Groups

In order to get an idea of life at the university, you should join relevant social media groups and start following accounts on Twitter. For instance, join the group made for your class, so that you can meet other people who you will be studying with. Joining the right groups could prove to be a very important decision. For instance, passing students may give away their books or sell them to other students at cheaper rates. It will help you save a fortune on textbooks, since the prices of textbooks in the United States are very high.

Financial Aid

You may need to apply for financial aid if you can’t afford to pay the semester fee every year. The Concordia University Chicago has a bursary and a separate financial aid program that you should check out if you are looking to apply for financial assistance. Make sure you read the terms and conditions of student loans and financial aid before you send in your application.

Once all that is done, you should register for classes through the university’s online portal and read more about life at the school. It will give you an idea of what to expect when you first step on campus. Try to befriend a few students through Facebook and other social media websites so that you have someone to talk to when you first arrive at the university. Having a few friends will make it infinitely easy for you to settle down at the university during the first few months.
